Melton & Rutland NPA Commander Inspector Darren Richardson
Welcome to my weekly update for the residents and communities of the Melton & Rutland Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA).
This newsletter will be circulated on a regular basis and will provide an insight into what is happening at the NPA.
Inspector Darren Richardson
#YouSaid - What matters to you
When I am out and about across the NPA it is evident that there are issues that matter to you. In this newsletter I will write about two
of them: ASB and speeding.
ASB - closure orders
Last week Melton Borough Council and local police applied for and had granted by the courts a closure order on a property in Melton
due to multiple reports of anti-social behaviour from the location. Shown below are PC Shane Sanderson and a member of council staff
safer communities team at the property.
A closure order can prohibit access to the premises, or part of them:
at all times, or at specified times only
by everyone (including the tenant and other residents), or by specified persons only
A closure order can be made for a maximum of three months. However, the police or local authority can apply, before expiry of the
original term, for an extension up to a maximum of six months (overall).
A Magistrates' Court will make a closure order only if it is satisfied that:
a person has engaged, or is likely to engage, in disorder, antisocial or criminal behaviour on the premises
the use of the premises is, or is likely to be, associated with disorder or nuisance to members of the public
the order is necessary to prevent the occurrence, or re-occurrence, of the disorder, nuisance or antisocial/criminal behaviour
Breach of a closure order without reasonable excuse is a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment and/or a fine.
In addition, a breach of a closure order (prohibiting access to the tenant's property for more than 48 hours) by a secure or assured
tenant, or by someone living in the property or visiting, can lead to eviction under the mandatory ground for antisocial behaviour.
This was an excellent example of the local authority and the police working closely to tackle those causing harm and ASB in our communities.
Road Safety
As a part of our continued focus on road safety in Melton and Rutland we have plans to carry out enforcement at the following
locations over the next couple of weeks:
Old Dalby, Melton, Asfordby, Branston, Essendine, Lyddington, Preston and Clipsham.
The above locations are in addition to work already ongoing to tackle road safety in our towns and villages
along with the Fatal4 road safety operation and speed safety van deployment across Melton and Rutland. If your village is not on
the list, it does not mean your local team won’t be there, we take road safety very serious and we will target the locations that
‘YOU SAY’ are an issue. Shown below is PC Dan Daley being trained in the use of the speed gun.
#WeDid - What we are doing
Members of the NPA have also been undertaking drug enforcement warrants in Oakham.
Last week local officers executed two drug warrants in Oakham, both warrants have generated investigations following drugs and
other items recovered during the searches. We are fortunate that substance abuse in Rutland is very low compared to other parts of
the country, this does not mean we should be complacent in tackling drug dealing to cut off the supply chain to Rutland. These
warrants support excellent work completed over the last 12 months in Rutland, targeting vehicles bringing drugs into the area from neighbouring counties. Shown below is a vehicle stopped during the execution of one of the warrants.
