Colder Days...

Dear residents,

We hope that you all have had a lovely Christmas and New Years'.

As the snow has approached us, we would just like to remind you of the ways in which you can keep safe during this time. Though you may think a lot of it is basic knowledge, it is always helpful to remind you of the basics 😊

  • Ensure that you are caring for and looking after those who are vulnerable during this time, whether it be due to age or other vulnerabilities. This can include checking that they have all that they need during these cold days and doing some shopping for them, or assisting in walking their pets and so forth.
  •

  • Proceed with caution when you leave the house, and only leave if necessary. The paths and roads are going to be extremely slippy and causes an increased risk of accidents occurring.
  •

  • When driving, please keep a safe distance to avoid skidding into other vehicles and maintain a steady speed.
  •

  • During the colder months, appliances are more likely to experience malfunctions with their appliances, which can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Therefore, please check that all your appliances are in order frequently.
  •

  • Wrap up warm and have hot and nutrient rich meals to reduce the risk of falling ill during this time. Do not go into work if you are feeling unwell or in public places to reduce the risk of spreading any illnesses and/or worsening your condition. Wear bright coloured warm clothing to allow drivers to see you when it is getting darker.
  • Please be advised both Cyclists and pedestrians, that cars can take twice as long to stop in wet and icy weather conditions so when crossing the road, do not walk out between cars, but find a pedestrian crossing and utillise this.
  •

  • Do NOT leave your vehicle unattended when you are de-icing it. This is due to the increased risk of it being taken. Please be made aware that if the keys are in the vehicle and the vehicle is taken, then the insurance will not cover you for the vehicle. Furthermore, there is a risk element to leaving your vehicle running and unattended.
  •

  • Plan your route and allow enough travel time for possible road closures, slower driving. Always keep essentials and an emergency kit in the car with you such as: torch, first aid kit, fully charged mobile, windscreen fluid, ice-scraper and de-icer, blanket, jump leads, warning triangle, and such more.
  •

  • Heat your home safely, please keep in mind that turning the stove on for heat is unsafe. Never leave heaters on top of furniture or near water. Do not leave children unattended near space heaters. If you are lighting candles during the dark times then please do not leave them unattended.
  • Stay Safe,

    Wigston Police Team.
